still lake surrounded by mountains

my story

In 2017, after having graduated my oldest from our homeschool, and running deeper into burnout, I sent my two youngest to the local brick and mortar high school, and took a really long nap.

I slept for a year, moving from the couch to my bed, acknowledging all the weight of pressures that had been building for years as I refused to face them. There was a lot of grief. Some of my therapies started during that time, and since then I have learned much about how the body and mind work.

The therapies I began, and continue to use, are a counsellor, naturopathic doctor, yoga, the enneagram, sound nutritional practices (ie good whole foods that my body can handle, and moderation in how I do that), massage, and osteopathy. Throw in intentional friendships, rest when I need it - including saying no, and staying home - and lighthearted fun, especially when my heart aches, and that’s a picture of the new ways I face life.

As part of my search for healing, I studied ways to teach what I was learning- some of my challenges are universal. I would like to use my journey to help others find hope*.

*Born in the DR Congo in the early 1970s, the pastor of the local church gave me the name Kivuvu, which means Hope. My parents went on to name and call me, Laurel, but the idea that I have a “special” name has always captivated my imagination. It seems fitting that I base my life on hope in many deep ways.
